Mercury outboard poppet valve problems. If the water pump is faulty and not maintaining 12 psi, there is NOT enough pressure to push open the poppet valve and the lower flow of water from the top of the block feed hose will be the water that leaks out the Feb 22, 2012 ยท Poppet valve question Here's the scoop. I replaced the water pump and thermostats, and cleaned the poppet valve (it was in good shape, just a bit of mineral buildup). Still consider myself a " Marine Apprentice " after 48 years (learn something new every day). Tested it out of water with muffs, and the idle temp is now stable at ~150°F—problem solved there. We did a stator test to check for any voltage drops when the alarm sounds and nothing. Checked the poppet valve and apparently all is well - not stuck, dirty or clogged. We have changed the impeller, impeller housing, poppet valve, thermostats, and exhaust gaskets.
